Nestled in rolling hills of Penafiel, just a 30-minute drive inland from Porto, Solar Egas Moniz is a great pick for those looking to escape the stresses of city life. Set across a beautifully converted 19th-century house, with plenty of green vistas and a lovely decked pool area, this 10-room country retreat is all about rest and recuperation.
Staff are real experts in hospitality and will make you, your children and even your pets feel right at home. The hotel's location is fairly remote, but close enough to the city for day trips away, and there is plenty to do in the surrounding area. That being said, once you’ve had a taste for the place, you might struggle to make it out at all.
A simple breakfast is served each morning. While there is no restaurant on site per se, the hotel boasts an impressive wine cellar and light tapas meals can be arranged during the summer months, as can picnics. There are also basic kitchen facilities in some rooms, so opt for one of these if you want to self-cater during your stay.
The 10 lovely rooms are set across the main house and a more modern extension, though all have a crisp and contemporary feel with minimalist décor, bright white walls, and big comfy beds. The Portuguese poems on the walls in most rooms are a lovely touch and many offer breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
The outdoor pool is great for a refreshing dip in the summer months, or head to the nearby spa at São Vicente for a pampering massage or treatment. If you fancy something more active, bikes are available for hire, and horse riding can all be arranged along with rafting in Rio Paiva. Wine tasting in Quintas do Vale do Sousa can be organised, and the hotel plays host to workshops on organic farming and composting along with making vegetarian food, homemade bread, and jam.
There's plenty to keep small hands busy at this chic retreat, with a play area in the grounds, a small pool, and a vegetable garden where children are invited to learn about tending to crops. There's also babysitting available if you fancy some time out à deux.
Free parking is available.
