This multi-award-winning boutique hotel prides itself on delivering first-class service without pretentiousness - and it certainly succeeds. Located on the Tanzanian archipelago of Zanzibar, also known as the Spice Island, Matlai sits right on the beach overlooking the crystal-clear Indian Ocean.
Family-run by owner Inge Becker-Boost and her son Tim Hennig, the hotel excels on service; from the warm greeting on arrival at reception, to the charming waiting staff serving your meals in the restaurant.
The personal feel doesn’t end there; Matlai has just six rooms, all of which have been individually designed with careful attention to detail. Décor is stylish, with cool tones and intricate light fittings - not to mention glorious views out over the sea.
It’s worth noting that this is an adult-only hotel and is therefore unsuitable for children twelve years old and below.
Tuck into freshly-caught seafood and traditional Kiswahili dishes at the restaurant, in the garden or in the comfort of your own room. A great cooked-to-order breakfast is also served in the mornings and is included in most room rates (see rate detail below).
Each of the six rooms has been individually designed with plenty of white, dark woods and locally sourced crafts. Beds are kitted out with premium bedding and there is a pillow menu to pick from. Most rooms feature postcard-perfect views out over the sea, and some even have their own terrace to relax on.
Sitting right on the beach, the hotel is well-stocked in white sands and glittering sea. After a day of sun-soaking, cool off in the refreshing outdoor pool.
As if that isn’t pampering enough, the hotel also has its own spa, where you can relax with an array of massages and treatments.
If you’re after something more active, bikes are available for hire at the hotel - a great way to explore the surrounding area.
