Housed in a converted townhouse in one of Vienna’s trendier areas, Hotel Altstadt comes highly recommended. You’re just a 15-minute stroll from the centre of town, so still within reach of all the main sights but you’ve got your own hip suburb to explore.
The interior here is eclectic and artful. Big on colours – stripes, decals and brightly painted walls make for a playful, unpretentious aesthetic and each room is individually designed with no two the same. It is also packed full of modern art – think Andy Warhol, Gilbert & George and Annie Leibowitz – all part of owner Otto Ernst Wiesenthal's private collection.
This is a small boutique, so don’t expect big facilities but the service will certainly make your stay extra special – the staff here are wonderful and the lovely, intimate bar is a fab spot for tea.
A delicious buffet breakfast is served each morning.
There is a bar, with an open fire, and snacks available throughout the day along with afternoon tea.
Head into Vienna for dinner – the hotel has a long list of recommendations. Steirereck Restaurant is our top pick for classic Austrian cuisine.
Each of the 45 bedrooms has been individually designed with no two the same. The style here is artistic and eclectic with famous architects and designers hired to make each space interesting and unique and a variety of styles from traditional to more contemporary.
Located in Spittelberg, Vienna's trendy artistic quarter. The Museums Quarter is about 5-minutes' walk away and most of the major sights are within walking distance.
