Built in the 19th-century, this picturesque manor was formerly the hunting lodge for Lord Lonsdale, before becoming the boutique hotel that it is today. In keeping with its Lake District setting, the stone exterior belies a distinct country style; from the oak-panelled dining room, to the rich patterned curtains and tapestry rugs.
If you can drag yourself away from the cosy sitting room, sit out on the terrace and soak up the jaw-dropping views out over Lake Windermere and beyond. To top it off, there’s also an incredible restaurant and relaxing spa, not to mention some absolutely wonderful staff - it’s no wonder the hotel holds a string of different awards.
It’s worth noting that this hotel is not suitable for children under eight years of age.
You certainly won’t go hungry here; with an award-winning restaurant on site, the hotel ensures that you’re in for a treat come dinner time. Specialising in British cuisine with an innovative twist, it sources produce locally and according to the seasons. In true British style, the hotel also offers an extravagant afternoon tea, complete with sandwiches and freshly-baked delights.
A great breakfast is served in the mornings and is included in most room rates (see rate detail below).
Rooms come up in a range of different shapes and sizes, each having been individually designed with much care and attention to detail. Taking lead from the rest of the hotel, the décor is country chic; from the quaint patterned wallpapers and rich curtains, to the intricate headboards and cosy armchairs. Beds are kitted out with Egyptian cotton sheets, while bathrooms are sleek and modern. Dogs are allowed in some rooms - please notify the hotel ahead of arrival.
Get your pamper fix at the Holbeck Ghyll Spa, which not only offers a range of massages and beauty treatments, but also has plenty of facilities to make use of. Gaze out over the views from the outdoor hot tub, unwind in the sauna or take a turn in the steam room.
If it’s something more active you’re after, head over to the hotel’s tennis courts and challenge a fellow traveller to a game. Alternatively, hop into your walking boots and explore - the Lake District has been an inspiration to some of Britain's finest artists and poets, and you need only stroll down to the lake to see why. There are plenty of hiking trails and watersport opportunities nearby too - what better chance to embrace the great outdoors.
