Tucked away in the pretty narrow streets of charming Garachico, on Tenerife’s northwest coast, Boutique Hotel San Roque offers a luxe and lovely Canarian experience. Set across a beautifully restored 17th-century mansion, this 20-room boutique hotel offers an oasis of calm and a lesson in understated elegance.
Combining the traditional architecture with more contemporary design - beautiful colour-washed walls, gleaming floorboards and pitched wooden ceilings provide the perfect canvas to show off the chic hotel's impressive furnishings with pieces from the likes of Le Corbusier, Eileen Grey and Charles Macintosh and modern art pieces throughout.
Dominique and Laly, the charming owners, have a wealth of information about the island and they, along with their friendly staff, will have you feeling at home in no time.
The hotel’s wonderful restaurant - Restaurante Anturium - offers authentic Canarian cuisine along with a first-class wine cellar in a romantic courtyard setting with tables set up around the pool. A simple but delicious breakfast is also served here each morning.
There is also a cosy bar in the library that boasts plenty of design books to lose yourself in, along with an impressive drinks selection.
Set around two courtyards, each of the 20 rooms has been individually designed - incorporating the building’s original features and contemporary comforts to charming effect. Bathrooms are a particular treat with most boasting Jacuzzi bathtubs along with fluffy bathrobes and slippers.
The hotel’s sparkling pool beckons for a cooling dip whilst the sun terrace up on the roof offers the perfect place to catch some rays.
For the more active, there are bikes available to hire from the hotel, a tennis court just 100 metres away and the Buenavista Golf course a 15-minute drive away. The natural pools of Garachico Caletón are a 2-minute walk from the hotel, or for some (dramatically black) sand - head to Playa de Garachico a few minutes walk further on.
A world away from the package resorts down south, the pretty town of Garachico is well worth exploring - with its 16th-century seafront castle and Museum of Contemporary Art, housed in an old convent. There are also some lovely cafés and craft shops to discover just a short stroll away.
