Boutique hotels in Syracuse (3)

A millennium ago, Siracusa was one of the major centres of the ancient world. Settled by Greeks, Romans and Byzantines, the city is home to spectacular ruins. Modern Syracuse is a vibrant, welcoming place, keen to share its amazing heritage with the world. This is a must for those who love history, art and a little mystery.

Where to go

Explore the medieval lanes and alleyways of Ortygia, the old town. Delve into the Ear of Dionysus, an ancient cave, and site of worship. Take a food tour of the markets and restaurants of the city. Marvel at the Duomo and the ruins of the Temple of Apollo. See the eerie, awesome catacombs of St John. Hike around the Latomia dei Cappuccini, with its gorges and gardens. Relax with a cold drink and sea views, as the locals do.

Food & Drink

Think fresh seafood, vegetables and plenty of spice. The legacy of the city’s former inhabitants lives on in its delicious food. Regina Lucia (Piazza Duomo 6) offers wonderful seafood in a former palazzo of the city’s elite, looking out onto the Duomo. Elsewhere, over in the Jewish Quarter, Retroscina (Via della Maestranze 106) ‘remixes’ Sicilian classics in inventive ways.

Siracusa has a thriving nightlife scene that goes late into the evening. For something really quite special, try Tinkitè (Via Mario Minniti 3) a bar, cafe, bookshop and perfumery(!) that stays open late with excellent aperitivo. Elsewhere, Barcolla Siracusa (Via Pompeo Picherali 10) is a favourite among locals, with a free aperitivo buffet in the evenings.

Where to stay

Our pick for Siracusa is Donna Coraly resort, less than twenty minutes from the centre of town. This small, secluded boutique hotel has a large pool, a small, intimate spa for treatments, and has easy access to some of Sicily’s best beaches.

How to get there

The nearest airport is in Catania, and hour away. Easyjet flies from London to Catania daily.
