Boutique hotels in Suffolk

Lulu’s collection of boutique hotels in Suffolk started with Cotmandene, her own 5 bedroom house in the seaside town of Aldeburgh. This chic seaside house is the perfect alternative to a boutique hotel on the Suffolk coast and has everything a family or group of friends might need for a fun getaway: there’s a playroom for the children, a fully kitted-out kitchen, a pool room and a gorgeous garden with a BBQ for relaxing on lazy summer days. In Aldeburgh itself, pastel hued houses line up along the pebbly beach where fishermen sell their catch of the day. There’s an independent high street complete with a lovely one-screen cinema and plenty of shops and restaurants (try Regatta or The Lighthouse) but the town is best known for hosting the annual Aldeburgh Festival, a celebration of the arts with a focus on classical music. At any time of year, it’s worth making the ten minute trip to nearby Snape Maltings to catch a concert in the performance centre (and main festival venue in June).  The latest addition to Lulu's collection of boutique hotels in Suffolk is The Packhorse Inn which has 4 rooms, a restaurant and bar just down the road from Newmarket. The town is home to two racecourses, the National Horse Racing Museum and Tattersalls, the largest equine auctioneers in Europe. Serious horse racing fans can even take a Newmarket Experience ‘Hot Favourite’ tour which starts with a look round the training grounds and includes a behind-the-scenes peek at life on a racing yard.

Best of Suffolk

Other coastal towns to check out in Suffolk include Southwold, for its sandy beach and traditional pier, and Walberswick. It was once a busy port and has always been a particularly popular spot with artists thanks to its seaside setting and glorious open skies (witness the fruits of their labour at the town’s art gallery). Go crabbing on the beach or explore the surrounding heath and marshland, a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. If you’re feeling peckish, eat at The Anchor, an award-winning pub with a Saturday brunch menu, an outdoor Sunday BBQ in the summer and special curry nights every second Friday. In the summer months you can travel between Southwold and Walberswick on the rowing boat ferry which carries a handful of people at a time across the River Blyth.

From the coast, it’s an easy inland journey to Buxhall Coach House in Buxhall near Stowmarket, an Italian restaurant run by award-winning chef Honor and her mother Sarah Townsend in a tranquil parkland setting. Expect the best ingredients whipped up into lunch and dinner dishes such as Honor’s signature ‘pasta al forno’ with Umbrian pork and beef ragu or roast chicken with Italian herbs and lemon on spicy ratatouille with garlic and rosemary roast potatoes. Spend the afternoon pottering around the nearby, picturesque, medieval village of Lavenham, full of crooked thatched cottages, narrow streets and home to Lavenham Guildhall where you can learn about its once famous blue cloth industy.
