Set among the Siena hilltops in the heart of the National Reserve of the Val d'Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Castello di Velona is a luxury spa hotel and winery in Tuscany.
Originally a military fortress which dates back to the 11th-century, the most ancient part of the hotel today dates back to the 12th-century. In fact the hotel is rich in history, once the scene of fights between the Republic of Siena and Florence, and with a main porch dating back to the Renaissance period.
For years, the castle was left to ruin before it was bought by an entrepreneur who commissioned a total renovation that sensitively transformed the property into the luxury Italian boutique hotel it is today. In 2011, after the discovery of mineral volcanic hot springs, it re-opened its doors and now features 46 rooms and suites, the Abbazia restaurant and a spa.
Castello di Velona a magical escape for anyone interested in art, history, beauty, gastronomy, wine or pure relaxation. The Chic Retreat welcomes families, pets and those with reduced mobility.
The spa at Castello di Velona is a truly relaxing oasis set among the verdant, lush landscape of olive groves and vineyards. It has two outdoor pools, two indoor pools and two Turkish baths, all with mineral water from the underground hot springs at Castello di Velona. It also has a luxurious sauna, and 'emotional showers'.
There are five individual treatment rooms and a couples' treatment room, where guests can book in for a range of facials, body massages and scrubs.
Castello di Velona is just 12km from the town of Montalcino, and is within easy reach of Florence, Siena and Montepulciano. Visit important artistic and historical landmarks such as the extraordinary Sant Antimo Abbey and Monte Oliveto Maggiore Abbey. Near Castello di Velona, many Etruscan archaeological finds were discovered, which can be viewed in the Montalcino Museum.
At Castello di Velona, you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to meal times. There are three spots to choose from; the Il Brunello, Settimo Senso, and Dolce Vita Pool Restaurant.
Il Brunello is an ancient cloister at the heart of the hotel, which is sheltered by an elegant crystal cupola. A breakfast buffet is served here in the mornings, and it is an idyllic spot for a drink under the starry night sky. Here you can also enjoy a delicious cocktail or light lunch.
The Dolce Vita Pool Restaurant serves up drinks and light snacks throughout the day.
Settimo Senso is a gourmet restaurant located in the new wing of the castle. Romantic and chic, with a panoramic terrace offering incredible views, we highly recommend watching the sunset here as you tuck into your delicious meal. Dishes are inspired by Tuscan traditions, with a contemporary twist. Each is accompanied by wonderful wines, including those made on the estate.
Understandably, the wine is just as important as the food at Castello di Velona, and the wine list is centred around Brunello di Montalcino, which is produced in the hotel's own 5-hectare winery. Castello di Velona is also renowned for its olive oil, which is made using traditional pressing methods.
