Set among the Siena hilltops in the heart of the National Reserve of the Val d'Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Castello di Velona is a luxury spa hotel and winery. The hotel is rich in history, with structures still standing that date back to the 12th-century when the Castello was a military fortress during the tumultuous wars between Siena and Florence.
Whether pampering yourself in the geothermal spa, or relaxing amongst the olive groves after a day-trip to the stunning medieval splendour of nearby Siena, Castello di Verona offers an unforgettable escape in the sun-kissed Tuscan countryside.
At Castello di Velona, you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to meals, with three choices to pick from. Il Brunello, in the ancient cloister at the heart of the hotel, is an enchanting place to enjoy a cocktail beneath the night sky, which you can glimpse through an elegant crystal cupola. Throughout the day, drinks and light snacks are served at the Dolce Vita Pool Restaurant.
Settimo Senso is a gourmet restaurant located in the new wing of the castle. Romantic and chic, with a panoramic terrace offering incredible views, we highly recommend watching the sunset here as you tuck into your delicious meal. Dishes are inspired by Tuscan traditions, with a contemporary twist.
Understandably, the wine is just as important as the food at Castello di Velona, and the wine list is centred around Brunello di Montalcino, which is produced in the hotel's own 5-hectare winery. Castello di Velona is also renowned for its olive oil, which is made using traditional pressing methods.
The rooms at Castello di Velona combine history, antique furniture and sumptuous textiles with modern comforts. The castle rooms are in the historic part of the building, and have an elegant décor, with oak-beamed, vaulted roofs and wide decorative fireplaces. Sunset rooms, in the hotel’s contemporary wing, come with spacious bathrooms or private outside patios. Many rooms face the magnificent landscape of the Val d'Orcia and the surrounding vineyards.
The spa at Castello di Velona is a truly relaxing oasis set among the verdant, lush landscape of olive groves and vineyards. It has two outdoor pools, two indoor pools and two Turkish baths, all with mineral water from the underground hot springs once used by pilgrims on the Via Francigena. There are five individual treatment rooms and a couples' treatment room, where guests can book in for a range of facials, body massages and scrubs.
Castello di Velona is located just twelve kilometres from the town of Montalcino, in the heart of a countryside rich in beauty and history. Take a trip to the vineyards where the iconic Brunello di Montalcino is grown, or roam the ramparts of the imposing 14th-century Fortezza. Be sure to take some time to visit the Abbazia di Sant’Antimo, a beautiful Romanesque monastery with stunning examples of medieval religious artwork. Try and visit when the monks are performing Gregorian chants: they have been doing it since the monastery was founded by Charlemagne in 781.
