The curiously named Hotel Gutkowski doesn’t sound like it would be found along the Italian coast, but there it stands. Set on the seafront in the picturesque island town of Ortigia, in south-east Sicily, this sweet little boutique is a popular spot.
No worries if you don't nab a room with a sea view – the terraces offer the perfect spots for a sunny breakfast or sundowner with a view.
You’re well located to visit all the hot spots of the lovely old town, and staff have plenty of great suggestions on where to eat and drink – so just be sure to ask. This is a great value, boutique gem – just be sure to book early, this place fills up fast.
Breakfast is served (out on the terrace in fair weather) and is included in most room rates. There is a great restaurant on-site which serves a small but delicious menu most evenings.
The 25 rooms are set across two buildings and, whilst furnishings are a little sparse, the white-washed, minimalist chic is all part of the hotel's simple, seaside charm.
Located in the Ortigia, the historical centre of Syracuse in Sicily, there are archeological sites aplenty all within walking distance of the hotel. There are a couple of swimming spots on the island but for proper beach, you'll need to head back to the mainland.
