Perched above the edge of Santorini’s famous Caldera, the fusion of the luxurious La Maltese Estate with the trendy Buddha-Bar concept has brought a touch of Asian glamour to this Cycladic island. The hotel sits within a renovated Neoclassical mansion, and there’s a spot of luxury to the décor, with rich fabrics and polished woods complementing the traditional whitewashed walls.
The hotel’s Caldera-side pool is perfect for soaking up the views of this dramatically beautiful island, while in the evening the Buddha Bar is the ultimate spot to enjoy Santorini’s spectacular sunset before partying into the small hours. Although it might not be to everybody’s taste, La Maltese Estate Buddha Bar is ideal for those who are looking for something a little different from more traditional Santorini hotels.
It’s worth noting that, while the hotel remains open during the off-season, services may be more limited.
The Buddha Bar restaurant serves contemporary Asian cuisine with a Mediterranean twist. Light tapas-style bites and sushi are available throughout the day on La Maltese’s chic terrace, while in the evening enjoy a more complex gastronomic experience in the Buddha Bar dining room, beneath the benign smile of a whitewashed Buddha statue. The Bar offers a range of experimental and bespoke cocktails, expertly crafted by Buddha Bar’s world-class mixologists.
There are 9 boutique rooms within La Maltese, and the décor is traditional albeit with a luxurious twist such as gold-leafed mirrors and beautiful four-poster beds. Each room is styled individually, and vary due to the historical nature of the property, with some flooded with natural light and others more intimate with low, cavernous ceilings. Many of the rooms have views over the Caldera; some have use of a private pool, whilst others have outdoor hot-tubs or private terraces.
The cliff-side terrace is the perfect place to bask in the sun while enjoying the sparkling waters of the Aegean below, and the hotel’s pool, while not the largest, is ideal for a refreshing splash. In the evening, enjoy one of the Buddha Bar’s expertly mixed cocktails as you watch Santorini’s famously spectacular sunset melt into the horizon. After the sun goes down, the Buddha Bar becomes one of the island’s liveliest spots, with frequent guest DJs and signature cocktails keeping the party going until the early hours of the morning.
