Set on the corner of Plaza Gipuzkao, a block back from the Old Town and boasting just a handful of apartments (attached to a separate pension by the same name) - Legazpi Doce Studio Suites is a great value pick for your stay in San Sebastián.
Inspired by the Basque cuisine the city is famed for, the owners were keen to pay homage to this culinary heritage throughout. As a result, you will find corkscrew collections and cookbook pages dotted around and, on the walls of the entrance, large posters detailing the stories of local food heroes – of which there are many.
There is a simple breakfast of croissants, yoghurt, juice, and coffee served each morning. For something heartier, there are plenty of excellent cafés nearby. For lunch and dinner, head to the pintxos bars of the Old Town or book yourself into one of San Sebastián’s 10 Michelin-starred restaurants.
The 5 apartments are decorated in a simple and contemporary style – offering a living area and a fully equipped kitchen. What’s more, many of the studios come with spectacular views of San Sebastián’s most charming square: the Plaza de Gipuzkoa.
Legazpi Doce is near the beaches and the Old Town but, for something a bit different, take a boat to the Isla de Santa Clara – a small but charming island which sits in the Bahía de la Concha. While away the afternoon exploring the hidden nooks and crannies of this beautiful island, enjoy the spectacular views of the bay before you, or stroll up to the island’s lovely lighthouse.
Alternatively, pay the Museo de San Telmo a visit: an intriguing museum about the cultural heritage of the Basque country. The building itself is interesting enough: previously, it was a 16th-century Dominican convent and, later, it served as artillery barracks. Now home to an array of art and artefacts documenting the history of the region, the Museo de San Telmo really is worth a visit before you leave.
