12-room castle hotel
Dates back to 15th-century
Two Michelin-starred chef
History comes by the bucket load at this grand castle hotel in Zell am See, Salzburg. Dating back as early as the 15th-century, the hotel has passed through many different hands during its time, finally ending up in the arms of the renowned Porsche family where it began its like as a boutique hotel - - in fact, Porsche’s can still be rented from the hotel today.
Today the hotel is run by the charming Anette and Andreas, who also run the outstanding gourmet restaurant. The décor is just as lovely, with a mesmerising blend of original furnishings and modern hints; think beamed ceilings, antique pieces and grand chandeliers. The result feels something like a medieval fairy tale, helped along the hotel’s magnificent turrets and towers.
Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, Schloss Prielau pulls another delight out the bag. Set within lush and carefully tended gardens, the hotel offers some truly remarkable views out over the countryside to the mountains beyond. Better yet, at only twelve rooms, the place really feels like your own romantic castle.

The hotel’s wellness spa offers a range of pampering massages and treatments to treat yourself to. Here you can also sink into the steam bath, or take a turn in the sauna - you’d be hard-pressed not to leave relaxed.
Skiers can also make the most of Austria’s snow-dabbed mountains, with some great skiing opportunities nearby. The staff are more than happy to help arrange ski passes should you wish. Alternatively head to the hotel’s private beach on Lake Zell, where you can soak up those sensational views from the comfort of a deck chair.
A great buffet breakfast is served in the mornings, with a range of both hot and cold dishes to choose from. Later in the day, you’ll be spoilt for choice with two restaurants to pick from. Schlossküche café serves a range of light bites and beverages, not to mention some rather indulgent cakes.
Alternatively head to the MAYER’s restaurant, which is run by two Michelin-starred chef, Andreas Mayer. Here you can tuck into gourmet French dishes, which are all made using seasonal and organic produce.
