This handsome, 15th-century former knight's residence, just within the Old City’s walls, is the first house you see as you enter through the Gate of St. John. Rhodes’ long history of being passed between Greek and Turkish rule meant Kokkini Porta Rossa fell into disrepair. Now, lovingly restored, behind the big red door lies an inviting 6-bedroom sanctuary of calm, dotted with artefacts from owners Nikos and Angela’s impressive private collection.
An exceptionally friendly team of staff give great recommendations for what to see and do in the area and make this boutique experience totally personal.
Breakfast and dinner are served in the pretty courtyard, under the shade of a mulberry tree. Using local ingredients and traditional methods, breakfast includes citrusy scrambled eggs with home-grown lemon and marjoram, salty pan-fried halloumi, fruits, yoghurt and homemade breakfast cakes.
Dinner is particularly special. Ignoring local competition, dinner at Kokkini comes at a premium, but is well worth it. Mediterranean dishes are expertly crafted with the freshest of produce, and meals are paired with handpicked Rhodian and Greek wines. Beyond the hotel, the Old Town brims with cosy, traditional tavernas and inns frequented by friendly locals.
A clever blend of Greek and Turkish-inspired décor reflects the splendour of the owners’ collection of valuable antiques. The baby grand piano gives the immediate feeling of grandness as you enter the property.
The 6 suites are named after former noble residents and many include separate sleeping and living spaces, with daybeds in the living area for extra guests. The bathrooms have a selection of vintage tubs, whirlpool baths or hydro-massage showers for total relaxation.
No need to lament the lack of a pool, the beaches and coves of the old city are just minutes away. Take the time to explore the ancient landmarks, such as the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes, and the medieval clock tower of Roloi and the striking Suleiman’s Mosque, or simply enjoy an amble around the glimmering harbourfront, all within walking distance.
Kallithea beach, popular with locals, is just 4 km away. Kokkina can organise car rentals, ideal for exploring further afield on this historic island. You can also access the nearby Spal gym and spa with a special discount from the hotel.
