Why so chic?
Why travel experts chose this hotel
Only when you book with Chic
We love a hotel with an unusual history here at Chic Retreats, and the Sandhotel does not disappoint. A combination of three historic townhouses, this stylish boutique hotel has a mishmash of different stories to tell; not only has one of the buildings home been home to the prestigious Sandholt bakery for years - trust us, the cinnamon buns are to die for - but one was also the residence of Nobel laureate and esteemed writer Halldór Laxness.
Aside from its history, there’s much to allure at this Chic Retreat. The Art Deco décor lends itself in trendy light fittings, sleek furnishings and rich fabrics. Staff are lovely and are able to help out with anything from grabbing you a pastry to organising tours of the area.
You won’t go hungry here: the popular bakery from which the hotel gets its name is just next door, serving a delicious array of local pastries and cinnamon buns (an absolute must). If a pastry just won’t cut it, head to the hotel restaurant, Sandbar & Bistro, which serves all the classics for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Rooms are, for the most part, monochrome, with volcanic stone features and trendy light fittings. Most also come with stylish photographs and trendy artwork. Bathrooms are modern and come with the added treat of luxe toiletries. Four of the rooms are wheelchair accessible - please notify the hotel of your requirements ahead of arrival.
The hotel is located in the Reykjavik 101 district, the hotel is just a stroll away from the striking Hallgrimskirkja church and City Hall. You’re in a great spot for shop-hopping and bar-sampling here too, with plenty to choose from in the area.
