Restored 300-year-old townhouse
12-room boutique hotel
Charming rooftop terrace
If you want to be right in the centre of Udaipur’s Old Town, then Madri Haveli (Madri’s mansion) is the place for you. Set in a restored 300-year-old townhouse that used to belong to the King of Madri, the Haveli is now owned by a French hotelier who has undertaken an extensive renovation of the property, with plans under way to expand into the building next door.
With only 12 rooms, this budget boutique hotel has a rather personable feel, helped along by the charming staff who go out of their way to ensure you have a good stay. Life takes place at a leisurely pace here too – great for a bit of r&r. Due to the building’s thick walls, it’s worth noting that WiFi doesn't stretch to all corners of the property, but it works well in the central points, and with so much to intrigue in the city, we shouldn't think you'll notice much.
Located in the old-town area of Udaipur, both the City Palace and the Chand Pole Puliya footbridge are about a 5-minute walk away. You're well-set for shopping here too, with shop-lined streets and that typical Indian city bustle.
There is a small restaurant on the roof, which has some lovely views out over the sprawling city of Udaipur. A simple but wholesome breakfast is served there in the mornings, and is included in some room rates (see detail below). The roof restaurant is also open for both lunch and dinner, serving authentic Mughlai cuisine and Rajasthani dishes – snacks and light meals are available throughout most of the day.
For those of you partial to a tipple, it’s worth mentioning that Madri Haveli is not currently licensed to serve alcohol, but there are plenty of great bars nearby.

Madri Haveli, 70, Ganesh Gati, 313001 Udaipur, India
Madri Haveli is at the top of a small hill, set on one of the narrow roads in the Old Town, so if you’re arriving by car, it is about 500m walk from the roads. Nonetheless, the staff at the Haveli will be more than happy to come down and help carry luggage, or alternatively, you can get a rickshaw Udaipur Railway Station is a 35-minute walk from the hotel (3km) The hotel can help arrange transfers to and from the airport (extra charge applies)
Udaipur’s Maharana Pratap Airport is a 45-minute drive from the hotel (23km)
Set around an internal courtyard, each of the 12 rooms are simple and minimalist, with dark wood furnishings, white walls and polished concrete floors. The cheaper options can come up a tad small and don't offer air-conditioning, so if you like your space, we recommend upgrading to Deluxe or even a Suite – the largest of which comes with pretty multi-coloured stained glass windows.
