Just 15 minutes from the centre of Perugia, Relais Casamassima is surrounded by the beautiful green hills of Umbria, a magical region in the centre of Italy. This hidden gem is a simple, but stylish chic retreat or 'agriturismo', offering an unpretentious escape from everything and everyone! The estate's farm was created at the end of the 19th-century, and to this day produces extra-virgin olive oil and wine. The relais has just 4 spacious suites, a deluxe double room and private swimming pool – a private and tranquil oasis, offering a welcome change to the larger hotels in town.
Note: the pool is open from June (sometimes the end of May) to September.
Breakfast is served alfresco on warm and dry days, or inside in what was once a greenhouse when the weather isn't so amenable.
Homemade lunch and dinner using local produce are available (advance notice required), and regional cooking classes can also be arranged.
The suites and deluxe double are individually decorated in a mixture tones. Choose Suite 1 or the deluxe bedroom and be greeted by grays, blues, and a touch of orange; choose 2 or 4 for their natural tones; and 3 is the most spacious and features purple and green accents.
As standard the rooms come super-well equipped with: air-conditioning, in-room safe, refrigerated mini-bar, kettle with complimentary tea andcoffee, 32 inches LCD flat screen satellite television, complimentary wireless Internet access, fireplace, chromotherapy, hair dryer, courtesy products, top quality linens and towels, down duvet, and pillows.
The working farm (agriturismo) started life at the hands of Giuseppe Ragnotti (Professor of Anatomy at the University of Perugia), grandfather of the current owner. Passionate about agriculture – especially wine and olive oil – his legacy continues today. Guests are welcome to enjoy tastings during their stay.
The university town of Perugia is just 15 minutes away, and the charming towns of Assisi and Citta di Castello are within a 45-minute ride. Hire a car if you can, to explore the verdant region.
How to get there
From wherever you're driving, set Google Maps / your satnav to Montelaguardia, Perugia – the highway is the best route to choose. The little village of Montelaguardia is just one kilometre from Relais Casamassima. After you pass through Montelaguardia you'll see the first of three signs – "AZIENDA AGRITURISTICA CASAMASSIMA" – standing by a large bus stop. After a few metres you'll see the second sign – turn right there. The last sign is at the main gate to the property.
