Nestled in the hills between Gubbio and Perugia, the magnificent Castello di Petroia offers an unforgettable getaway in an enchanting and unique property. The 9th-century castle has had a long and rich history, changing hands from one noble family to the other until passing to the present owners, the Sangrini family, in 1925.
Sitting amidst ancient olive trees and parkland, this atmospheric spot overlooks the hills and valleys surrounding Gubbio. Herds of the region’s famous Chianina cattle are dotted across the beautiful landscape that once inspired artists such as Piero della Francesca. Behind the formidable medieval walls, the thirteen simple rooms are split between three original medieval structures.
Castello de Petroia welcomes children, and cots can be provided on request. Your little ones will enjoy exploring the atmospheric castle buildings and the sweeping grounds.
It’s worth noting that this Chic Retreat closes for the winter season.
Dining in the medieval Guidubaldo hall at Castello di Petroia is an experience not to be missed. This is where guests enjoy their daily breakfast of cakes, fruit and Umbrian cured meats, among other delicacies.
With thick stone walls and a large fireplace, the Accomandugi Restaurant is a very romantic setting in which to spend the evenings. Chef Walter Passeri has created an authentic Umbrian menu, which also includes both meat and fish dishes. The restaurant prides itself on using fresh ingredients from the grounds. Pasta is home-made, Chianina meat comes from the herds on the estate, along with truffles discovered by Cesare and Stella. Pair your meal with a bottle from the hotel’s extensive cellar of local vintages.
Rooms are spread between the three historic castle buildings. The décor evokes the rich history of the property, with original features such as heavy stone fireplaces, tenebrous exposed beams, and antique furniture though, accordingly, can feel a little bare. Many of the rooms have stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
There is a network of lovely footpaths around the Castello di Petroia estate, allowing guests to explore the beautiful parkland. Soak up the sun as you explore the meadows, streams and woods, keeping an eye out for deer, wild boar, and pheasants. Nestled amongst this Arcadian landscape is the hotel’s pool, perfect for a refreshing splash during sultry summer days. It's worth noting that, if you are here in the cooler months, the property is a little lacking in comfortable communal spaces for a drink or an afternoon spent with a book.
During the truffle season, guests are invited to join Cesare, the estate’s farmer, and Stella, his canine companion for a traditional truffle hunt. This is a particularly enchanting way to see the surrounding countryside.
