Set opposite Paris’ most famous university, the eponymous Hôtel Design Sorbonne has a modern Marie Antoinette feel. The grand wallpapers, antique pieces and soft furnishings are set to some seriously dramatic colour schemes – think bright greens and neon pinks. With a photo exhibition from a different local artist on each floor and a mural that winds up the staircase, this retreat is both quirky and lavish.
But never fear, you still get that charming authentic Parisian feel. The hotel is nestled in the 5th arrondissement, right in the heart of Paris' lively Latin Quarter and just a short walk from many of the city’s most famous sights.
A continental breakfast is served each morning.
The staggering number of local restaurants nearby more than make up for the lack of restaurant on site. Two particularly good finds only a 10-minute walk away are L’Avant Comptoir, a wine bar that offers affordable tapas-style dishes with a focus on fish and charcuterie, and Semilla, a local haunt serving unpretentious, truly Parisian dishes.
As with many of the hotels in Paris, everything is just a little compact, so expect relatively cosy rooms – though, if you can stretch, a Superior Double or Twin will bag you a bit more space and some of the Executive rooms on the top floor come with breathtaking views over the rooftops.
Just a 10-minute stroll will have you at many of Paris' must-see sights such as Notre Dame, the Jardin du Luxembourg, the Musée d’Orsay and the Pantheon.
While you’re there be sure to check out the Shakespeare & Co. bookshop, a literary refuge for many a famous writer in the past and the house that first published James Joyce’s Ulysses.
