Honeymooners with a love of history
Camera del Maresciallo is a large and luxurious B&B suite for two in the Veneto region near Padua and is part of a romantic medieval castle which has been in the same aristocratic Italian family since the 15th-century. Guests in the suite also enjoy many of the advantages of owner Count Emo Capodilista’s family estate, La Montecchia, including swimming, golf, tennis and wine-tastings at his multi-award winning vineyard.
Cozy and intimate, Camera del Maresciallo would make the perfect honeymoon escape. It can be enjoyed at any time of year, but our favourite is harvest in September when guests have the opportunity to experience the workings of a traditional Italian vineyard and farm close up. A complimentary wine-tasting in La Montecchia’s enoteca is an opportunity to learn more about the estate’s famously good wine. In summer, a newly-built bathing lake and traditional swimming pool allow for lounging and reading; golfers will want to take advantage of the reduced green fees offered to guests by La Montecchia’s golf club (where there is another, larger swimming pool). Tennis is also available at courts 400m from the estate and the surrounding Euganean Hills offer cyclists some challenging (as well as gentler) rides.
Michelin-starred La Montecchia restaurant, right next to the estate, is widely regarded as one of the best places to dine in the Veneto region. Chef Max Alajmo serves up reinvented regional classics in a restaurant run with his father and brother, while wine director Mauro Meneghetti presides over a list of 600 bottles, over half of which are available by the glass.

La Montecchia estate consists of an ancient castle, a separate, strikingly beautiful 16th-century villa by the architect and painter Dario Variotari, and an agritourismo wine estate. Camera del Maresciallo is located within the castle, which was renovated in 1930. Set on top of a hill, the castle’s massive central tower and fortified structure give it an air of ancient impregnability; its lucky owner, Count Emo Capodilista, is still resident in one of the wings. Inside, the Camera del Maresciallo suite is grandly decorated with antique furniture and precious original paintings all with a story to tell about the castle’s long history. The double bedroom has an en-suite bathroom and dressing room; adjoining it is an atmospheric and characterful dining and sitting room where breakfast is served. Comfortable sofas, rugs, an impressive marble fireplace, a library of antiquarian books, warm reddish hues and dark wood mean these rooms feel less like a B&B and more like the private chambers of Italian nobility – which of course they originally were. Modern facilities include Wifi, air-conditioning, a hairdryer and a small drinks fridge.
