Nestled in the foothills of the Supramonte mountains, between Oliena and Doragli, Hotel Su Gologone is an enchanting boutique hotel perfect for those that want to savour the true Sardinia. Every aspect of the hotel has been designed to champion, celebrate, and showcase the culture, cuisine and handicrafts of the island, from the use of traditional materials such as juniper and white plaster walls, to the restaurants serving hearty Sardinian fare. Su Gologone has an on-site crafts workshop, the Botteghe d’Arte, and the interiors are decorated with works by major Sardinian artists and furnishings created in the workshop.
Su Gologone is truly a spellbinding retreat and, as you relax beside a crackling open-fireplace with the haunting melodies of Sardinian canti a tenores drifting on the night-air, you’ll find it hard to believe that you aren’t dreaming.
A large hundred-year-old fireplace is the focal point of the restaurant at Hotel Su Gologone and provides the perfect setting during the cooler evenings. The pretty terrace offers a lovely al fresco alternative with an abundance of cascading flowers. The seasonal menu focuses on fresh local produce from the surrounding hills, as well as the hotel’s own kitchen garden. A foodies delight, the restaurant here is one of the best and most authentic restaurants on Sardinia, serving delightful specialities such as maccarones de busa (handmade bucatini) or porceddu allo spiedo (spit-roasted suckling piglet).
Bedrooms and suites feature white-washed walls and traditional materials, complemented by bold artworks and crafts by local artists. Many of the rooms have beautiful views, some with their own terraces or balconies.
Gardens filled with geraniums, bougainvillea and prickly pears provide plenty of spots to sunbathe or to relax with a good read, while the hotel’s pool is filled with spring-water from the nearby brook, and is particularly refreshing during the summer months. Unwind further in the hydromassage tub nestled amongst the olive trees, or enjoy one of the hotel’s morning yoga sessions.
The hotel offers a wealth of experiences for those that want to immerse themselves in Sardinian culture. Try your hand at baking bread in the traditional wood-fired ovens, or take part in an artistic workshop led by local craftsmen. The hotel’s secluded location makes it ideal for stargazing, and there are regular sessions guided by astronomers. In the evenings, the hotel regularly hosts performances of the famous canti a tenores, the traditional UNESCO-listed music of the Sardinian shepherds.
Further afield, the wild and untamed landscape of Sardinia is yours to explore. Lose yourself amongst the natural grottoes, ancient tombs and craggy mountains; keep an eye out for the nuragic villages, remnants of a civilisation that lasted from the Bronze Age to the 2nd-century CE.
