The Portobello Hotel is a much-loved romantic place to stay in Notting Hill. Located on a quiet street, this boutique London property is comprised of two converted neoclassical mansions and features 21 bedrooms. Since it was founded in 1971, it's been a haven for personalities from the worlds of music, fashion and entertainment and is sister hotel to Cowley Manor in the Cotswolds, L'Hotel in Paris and Canal House in Amsterdam.
Choose from a buffet-style continental breakfast or something the menu, where classics such as the Full English and boiled egg and soliders are available. Throughout the day, a selection of dishes are on offer in the sitting room ranging from sandwiches and sharing platters to risotto and salads, along with wine, beer and hot drinks. Both can be served to your room too.
And just a stone's throw are a number of excellent restaurants, from Core by Clare Smyth, The Ledbury and Orasay, to Farmacy and Ottolenghi. Bar-wise, lovers of juniper-based drinks should head to GinTonica, and for cocktails head to Tiki-inspired Trailer Happiness.
What we loved...
The position is perfect for exploring Notting Hill and there are some gorgeous shops, restaurants and cafes nearby. The rooms vary in size but they all have big beds, squishy pillows and wonderful bedlinen. The best night's sleep I've had a a hotel in London.
There are 7 room categories to choose from ranging from Box to Signature, with Comfy, Cosy, Jolly Good, Roomy and Splendid in-between. Some of have four-poster beds and freestanding bathtubs, others sitting rooms and a more flamboyant style. All have bath and body products by British brand Green & Spring, a turndown service, and well-stock mini bars.
The hotel couldn't be better placed to make the most of some of the capital's key attractions. Every Friday and Saturday, Portobello Road Market takes over the nearby streets; go for vintage fashion and antiques. Catch a film at the Electric Cinema, browse the designer fashion boutiques on Westbourne Grove and visit Kensington Palace in Kensington Gardens. There are a host of cultural sights nearby too, from the Natural History and Science museums to the V&A and Royal Albert Hall, which has an excellent programme of concerts. Holland Park is just a 10-minute stroll away, and the West End and theatreland are a short hop on the tube.
How to get there
The hotel is easily by public transport: walking distance of several tube stations including Notting Hill Gate (Central, Circle and District lines) and Ladbroke Grove (Hammersmith and City, Circle and District lines).
Heathrow / London City: 45 minutes by car, 1 hour by train / tube.
