There’s a sense of understated elegance to Riad Ariha, a century-old riad nestled in a quiet corner of the medina. This boutique gem has been sensitively restored, with traditional wrought-iron window grilles and sculpted arches and cosy alcoves. The minimalist, white-washed design makes an excellent canvas for the small antiques and contemporary objets d’art scattered around the sophisticated interiors. The central courtyard makes for an inviting spot to relax and enjoy the soft gurgling of the fountain, while there is a tented pergola on the roof for those that want to take in the vista of Marrakech and the Atlas Mountains beyond. The riad is perfectly located for exploring the souks and medieval streets of the city, and there is a pampering hammam perfect for unwinding after a day spent exploring.
A French-inspired breakfast is served daily in the courtyard, featuring plenty of fresh fruit juice, crêpes and yoghurt. While there is no formal restaurant at the Riad, meals can be served on arrangement. Enjoy wonderful homecooked Tagine and mountains of cous-cous either, in the courtyard or admiring the views from the rooftop terrace.
The riad’s 5 boutique bedrooms are each beautifully decorated in a simple yet chic style, with walls of soft stone and clean white lifted with splashes of colour from sweet smelling roses and locally-made cushions and rugs. Toiletries are all-organic products by Nectarôme, which sources its ingredients from an organic herb and flower bio-garden in the Ourika Valley.
Kick back with a good read in the picturesque courtyard, terrace or rooftop pergola. During sultry summer days, take a refreshing splash in the hotel’s tiny plunge pool, hidden within an alcove. Indulge in a session in the steamy hammam, and enjoy the attention of Riad Ariha’s qualified masseuse, who will rejuvenate you with the essential oils of lavender, lemon tree, thyme, rosemary and eucalyptus. For those looking for a real taste of Morocco, the riad offers a cookery class led by Khadija, the riad’s cook, who will show you how to prepare typical dishes such as Aubergine Salad to fragrant Tagines.
Located in a quieter corner of the Medina, Riad Ariha is still within walking distance of all of the sights, sounds and smells of this bustling city. Immerse yourself in the total sensorial assault that is the market-square of Jemaa el Fna, or gaze at the beautiful floral tiles of the Bahia Palace and the Dar Si Said. Alternatively, plunge into the souks to try and grab a bargain.
