Riad AnaYela is a 300 year-old palace and luxury riad in the heart of the Marrakech medina with an extraordinary story behind it. When the building was renovated in 2007 a small room was discovered behind a wall that was a later addition to the house and inside there was an old, dark wooden casket with a silver inlay and a story written in Arabic calligraphy on a sheet of paper. It was the tale of a 16 year-old girl called Yela who lived in the house and fell in love with a boy who lived down the road. At night she would sneak up onto the rooftop to look out over the skyline of the city and gaze at the stars. The restoration of the palace took months and all of the work was carried out by hand, using traditional Moroccan craftsmanship by over 100 artisans including one of the most renowned calligraphers in Morocco who hammered Yelas story in silver on the vast doors throughout the riad.
AnaYela can organise day trips into the Atlas mountains with a driver, a personal shopper to accompany you to the best shops in the souk and help with the haggling and a traditional evening soiree with live music, middle eastern dancing, snake charmers, soothsayers and a storyteller who will bring the tale of the house alive (in English, German or French). During the winter, you can relax with a mint tea around the open fire blazes in the lounge. If you are clever enough to guess the magic words then you can take a trip on the flying carpet from the rooftop terrace.
Eat breakfast or dinner on the roof terrace, which has a spectacular view thanks to its position as one of the tallest buildings in the old town. There is also an authentic nomad tent with an open fire for barbecues and traditional Moroccan meals can be arranged.
