Based around an old Mallorca finca dating back to 1672, Gran Hotel Son Net has been transformed into a small luxury hotel steeped in tradition but with a contemporary twist, seen for example in the art collection which features renowned artists such as Marc Chagall, David Hockney and Frank Stella. The wellness centre is another modern feature, perfect for pampering yourself during your stay.
Hugging the rugged Tramuntana mountain range, the hotel has a secluded position overlooking the picturesque town of Puigpunyent, and is perfect for a secluded rural retreat in this bold countryside, whether relaxing by the pool in the heat of the summer afternoon, or watching the spectacular sunsets across the Galatzo mountain.
Gran Hotel Son Net is famed for its two outstanding restaurants, and foodies will find themselves well-catered for. Oleum, set around a historic old olive-oil press, serves modern dishes inspired by Mallorcan and international cuisine. Gazebo, open during the summer months, is perfect for a relaxed lunch with their menu of Mediterranean dishes using produce from Son Net’s own vegetable garden.
The guest rooms are individually styled, but all share an elegant décor inspired by the original finca building, with many of the historic features still visible such as exposed ceiling beams. While the new terrace rooms and cottages are not in the main building and lack a little of the authenticity of the main house, they could be preferable for those looking for a bit more privacy.
The wellness centre offers a range of beauty treatments and massages to treat yourself with; try the Mediterranean Ritual based around sea-salt and almond oil for a truly luxurious experience. The large pool is perfect for a refreshing dip during the summer months, and it is lined with cabanas to lounge in, ensuring maximum privacy. The comfortable bar has a roaring fireplace, perfect for chillier evenings, while in the summer, the beautiful outdoor terrace is a great place to sip a bespoke cocktail while enjoying views over the Valley of Puigpunyent.
Gran Hotel Son Net is cultivating a vineyard beside the hotel, consisting of a half-hectare of the traditional Mallorca white Malvasia grape. The hotel produces white, rosé, red, and sparkling wines, as well as an olive oil, and oenophiles will want to take part on the organised walking tour which leads around the hotel’s vineyard and ends with the chance to taste some of the produce.
The hotel is a 30-minute drive from Palma, and the historic centre makes for an attractive day-trip. Of course, you can simply lounge by the hotel’s pool and forget about the outside world…
