Less is more at Palazzo Ducale Venturi, once a 16th-century fortress that's now home to a 20-room hotel. Surrounded by five centuries of history, culture, art and original features, not to mention lush vineyards and olive groves, this is a tranquil and relaxing spot to take a break. Situated just 15 minutes from the sea and Puglia's Porto Badisco beach, you can enjoy the best of both worlds: countryside and water.

    Dining

Breakfast is a relaxed affair and is laid out inside and outside during the warmer months. Expect fresh, local ingredients with a variety of homemade regional products and fragrant Italian coffee.

The pool bar offers light bites, and fixed menu meals are offered in the evening, with dishes dependent on what the chef sources at the local market. Booking is required.

    Accommodation

The Palazzo has 20 tastefully decorated rooms and suites spread across the main building and the old armoury, all with stone floors and thick walls, typical of Puglia. Some look out to the gardens, others have private patios.

    Activities

The outdoor pool is saltwater and the indoor pool is heated, converted from an underground oil mill. If you can drag yourself away from those and have the energy, there's a fully-equipped gym. Or hit the spa for additional relaxation. Choose from a list of classic, therapeutic or sports massages as well as traditional facial and body treatments.

Beach bunnies are spoilt for choice: some of the pearls of Salento are 15 minutes away including Santa Cesarea Terme and Porto Badisco. Otranto is the same journey time, and Gallipoli is 45 minutes by car.

Olive picking takes place in the second half of October: during this time stay for a minimum of three nights and join in the picking and production every step of the way with local farmers.
