Boutique hotels in Lazio (15)

Homeland of the Romans, Lazio is the third-most populated Italian province, after Lombardy and Campania. Obviously then, it is home to lots of spectacular art, culture, shopping, and food. It also has the benefit of a wonderful coastline with many stunning beaches. Underrated compared to such areas as Tuscany and Piedmont, exploring Lazio is a choice well made.

Where to go
Visit the birthplace of Roman Empire in Rome’s Forum. Shop on the Via Condotti Swim at Ostia, Ponza or Sperlonga. Wander the ruins of Rome’s major port at Ostia Antica. Work your way through hundreds of gelaterias. Drive through the stunning, scenic towns of Bagnoregio and Bracciano. Drive down the Via Appia and explore Roman catacombs, Find a sun-kissed pool to lie beside and practice your Italian cool.

Food & Drink

Want to eat well? You’ve got to the right place. Lazio has distinctive regional dishes that use a few ingredients such as tomato, olive oil, herbs and pasta, to great effect. In Rome, Ristorante St Ana (Via della Penna, 68) serves great homemade food in a 16th-century building with an incredible atmosphere. Elsewhere, within sight of the ancient Temple of Vesta, Ristorante Sibilla (Via della Sibilla 50) has been serving simple, good food to generations of Romans since the 1960s.

Lazio means Rome, and nightlife in Rome means finding a little hole in the wall in which to linger over drinks well into the evening. Gregory’s Bar is such a place, with the added benefit of cool jazz. Elsewhere Bar del Fico (Piazza del Fico 26) is the classic Roman wine bar, immensely fashionable and popular, yet somehow still retaining the feel of a neighbourhood bar.

Where to stay
Our favourite Lazio hotels are located in Rome. The Tribune is a bold and colourful design hotel oozing Italian style. The Rome Times has more of a classic feel, with an unbeatable location close to all the major sights. Finally, the Hotel Lord Byron is an intimate boutique hotel set in a gorgeous 1930s villa.
