Château des Ducs de Joyeuse is a 16th-century castle set in beautiful grounds on the banks of the River Aude, in the heart of the Cathare region of south west France. This is a family run business led by charming Isabelle and Vincent and a team of attentive staff. The property is built around a central courtyard ‒ the perfect place to have a leisurely breakfast or candlelit supper during the warmer months.
It's worth noting that due to the age of the building, there is no air conditioning or lift.
A continental breakfast is served each morning and can be enjoyed out in the courtyard or in the rather grand dining room. Come dinnertime, there's an excellent restaurant specialising in fine French cuisine using locally sourced produce.
The 34 rooms are tastefully decorated in a medieval style and spread across 5 categories: Renaissance, Knight, Family Duplex, Upper, and Prestige.
When it all gets too hot, cool off with a dip in the river or swimming pool. There's also a tennis court, or you’re feeling more adventurous hire a canoe or set out to explore the area by bike.
The château is located on the edge of the sleepy town of Couiza in the foothills of the Pyrenees. UNESCO-desginated Carcassonne is a 40-minute drive, and the coastal city of Perpignan is about 90 minutes away by car, and home to a number of beaches. If you're a wine fan, head to Limoux and Corbières for tastings.
