Windermere Estate is a small boutique hotel in Idduki, Kerala, a rustic-chic hideaway overlooking acres of tea plantations against the backdrop of the awe-inspiring Western Ghats. Choose from the plantation house-style rooms, the spacious cottage rooms and the romantic Planter's Villa rooms, all individually styled and all affording breathtaking views over the valley, tea fields and mountains. With the friendly owner family living nearby and a welcoming team of staff, you can make the most of their wealth of local knowledge and explore the wonderful trekking paths through the cardamom plantations, walks through the mountains and woods and picnics out on the grounds before returning to Keralan cuisine in the restaurant or a cosy night-time barbeque and campfire.
The Windermere Estate is a paradise for nature lovers, with a wide variety of flora, fauna and bird species to be found across the various habitats, from mountain to forest, tea field to cardamom plantation. Jeep safaris can be arranged around the Kolugumalia Tea Plantation with a visit to one of the region's oldest tea factory's, or take a safari through Matupeety, Kundla Dam and the Shola Forest by jeep to Marayoor with its natural sandal wood trees and caves with murals and relics from the New Stone Age civilisation. We recommend the guided 4-hour mountain trek where you can enjoy spectacular views over the colonial town of Munnar, also a great place for a day trip. Every day, there is a guided 2 hour trek of the plantation where you can learn about the vegetation and birds that inhabit the estate. Echo Point can be reached on the way up to the Top Station, the highest point on the Munnar-Kodaikanal Road, where you can experience the extraodinary natural echo phenomenon. Down in Munnar Town, you can learn more about the art of tea making in the Tea Museum and visit the colourful vegetable & fruit market. For those who enjoy golf, there is a course 4 kms from Windermere. In the evenings, enjoy locally grown tea in the library with your fellow guests, or perhaps a bonfire in the Boulder Garden.
For breakfast, enjoy a choice of Continental & South Indian dishes including dosa, idili, puri and eggs, bacon, sausage, fruit, toast and juices, all served in the Alpine-style Barn. For lunch choose from a traditional Keralan lunch or sandwiches, with dishes such as vegetarian curries, rice and a non-vegetarian dish followed by an Indian sweet. For dinner enjoy a table d'hote menu of Keralan cuisine such as cream of carrot soup, appam, aloo-palak, fish moiley and butter rice & coconut soufflé, while snacks and afternoon tea are served in the Keralan-style Hut.
