Perched on the edge of a cliff overlooking the golden sands below sits Blooming Bay Guest House, made up of a cluster of 15 beachfront rooms. Given its small size, you can expect plenty of peace and quiet here, helped along by the regular yoga classes and its popular ayurvedic centre.
While décor and room fit-outs are fairly simple, it's all about location location location here. As the hotel is set a half-hour walk from the more hectic North Cliff area of Varkala, it is a decidedly peaceful and picturesque retreat. Plus, you can catch yourself some stunning views out over the Arabian Sea from the hotels' expansive gardens. Lying in a hammock slung between palms, with the sun shining on and the sea crashing away, we thought we’d died and gone to heaven.
The restaurant at Blooming Bay serves delicious freshly-caught fish, classic Keralan dishes and some Chinese delicacies too. You can also wander along the beach to find plenty of other restaurants dishing up local fare and seafood. About a 10-minute walk away is Soul & Surf, where they serve the most delicious fish tacos at lunch.
The style across the 15 rooms is simple and cosy. The cheaper rooms have a fan instead of air-conditioning and no view, so we'd recommend upgrading to bag yourself some air-conditioning and a slice of seascape.
There are regular yoga retreats held in the Blooming Bay gardens. As such, there is an outdoor yoga platform and yoga classes can be arranged with the hotel. For the less limber among you, there’s an ayurvedic treatment centre offering a range of well-priced massages. Paradise, really.
