Jakes Hotel, on the wonderfully named Treasure Beach, is the perfect place to get to know Jamaica. This isn’t a touristy spot, it’s an intimate, family-run hotel that feels like a true slice of the Caribbean and offers the chance to enjoy some real beachside living.
Created by set-designer, poet and artist Sally Henzell and her family, Jake's started as a one-hut restaurant back in 1991 gradually growing to the cluster of colourful and eclectic little cottages that it is today.
The restaurant is an island fantasy – outdoor dining, candlelit and right by the sea. There’s even a spa on site and yoga classes available if you’re not chilled out enough. With unfailingly friendly service and the sound of the sea lapping the shore nearby, this is an unbeatable place to relax.
Jakes has two restaurants which serve fresh seafood and traditional Jamaican dishes. At Jake's main restaurant, fresh ingredients are the order of the day using the finest produce from local farmers, seasonal fish, crab and lobster are bountiful and fished in a manner that preserves the hotels eco-friendly standard, and all desserts and ice creams are home-made.
Jack Sprat's Pizza and Seafood Restaurant is a hub of lively music and local entertainment in a relaxed outdoor setting.
Dougie's Bar, famous for its rum punch, overlooks the mosaic-tiled seawater swimming pool and ocean beyond. Service begins in the morning and ends when the last guest calls it a night.
Rooms are bright and cheerful with comfy beds and a fun décor that fits perfectly with the laid-back, beachy vibe (if a little run down in places). A sea view will come at extra but is worth it, if you can stretch.
There is a salt-water swimming pool and a full service spa offering a range of beauty treatments and massages. If that hasn't got you relaxed, yoga classes are also available.
Located in the south of Jamaica at Treasure Beach in Calabash Bay, this is a less touristy part of the island. Whilst the beach in front of the hotel isn't sandy, there's Jack Sprat beach just nearby – be sure to check with the staff on currents, mind, there can be a rip tide or two.
