The charming seven-room Relais Torre Marabino takes its name from the the imposing fortified tower from that watched over these fields since the 15th-century. The historic construction gives this Chic Retreat a unique character, and the tower has been refurbished to provide for the discerning traveller. There is a large infinity pool, equipped with a whirlpool tub, and the hotel’s interiors are comfortable, making good use of the building’s original features. The fields that this tower once protected from roving bandits are now home to the Natural Iblea Organic Farm, producing some of the finest natural produce in Sicily; wine-lovers will enjoy sampling a glass (or two) of the wine that is produced from the vines visible through the old tower’s arrow-slits, stretching into the distance.
Breakfast is a magnificent Italian feast of organic products, the perfect start to days spent lounging beneath the vines and olive-trees. The Moresca Restaurant serves a seasonal menu using the rich produce from the hotel’s organic farm, and in the summer months spills out onto the outside terrace for an enchanting al fresco dining experience.
No meal would be complete without a bottle of local Sicilian wine from the Relais’ extensive wine cellar. The hotel produces its own vintage under the ‘Marabino’ label, using traditional bio-dynamic methods and featuring the famed Nero d’Avola and Moscato di Noto varieties.
Each of the seven charming en-suite rooms at Relais Torre Marabino are decorated using local materials, and feature original elements of the ancient tower such as exposed beams and large stone fireplaces. Many of the rooms enjoy lovely views across the surrounding countryside. Suites have a mezzanine sleeping area with a living area below.
The soft local stone of the original building lends a cool elegance to the interiors, while the lush gardens, featuring ancient olive trees, hanging vines and perfect lawns offer plenty of shady areas for relaxation. The large infinity pool is particularly inviting during the hot summer months, and there is a whirlpool tub large enough for five. A children’s play area, complete with swings and a slide, provides a space for the little ones to entertain themselves while you relax with a good book.
While it may be difficult to tear yourself away from the stunning pool and the laid-back atmosphere of the hotel, there are plenty of things to do in the surrounding area. Ispica is just a short drive away and boasts magnificent baroque architecture, while there are many beautiful sandy beaches for those that want to bathe in the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean.
