  • Overview

If you’re looking to retreat to the countryside for a weekend of fresh air, open fires and great food aplenty, then Brooks Country House may be just the one for you. Set in the beautiful rolling hills of Herefordshire in the picturesque Wye Valley, just outside Ross-on-Wye, this country outpost of the bijou Brooks hotel chain offers some serious bang for its buck.

The rather grand estate comprises of a beautifully renovated Georgian mansion (the main house) and a series of smaller buildings set around a pretty courtyard. With a small selection of rooms, an expansive 13 acres of land and even its own vineyard – this is a spot to really escape from it all.

If you’re visiting in the summer months, there’s a lovely heated pool set in a pretty walled garden (a veritable sun-trap) and plenty of great walks leaving right from the hotel’s doorstep. The exercise doesn’t end with your body; give your brain a workout as you work your way across the outdoor giant chessboard. If you fancy venturing beyond the hotel perimeters, the pretty towns of Ross-on-Wye and Monmouth are just a 15/20-minute drive away.

A great, made-to-order breakfast is served down in the gorgeous book-lined dining room. Dinner is also served here most evenings (worth checking ahead) along with afternoon teas and lunch on Sundays. There is a bar and drinks can also be taken through to the cosy drawing room. For an added splash of luxe, there is a small vineyard on the estate that produces a not-half-bad Sauvignon Blanc.

With a range of options available, no two of the rooms are the same. Nonetheless, all are nicely executed with some featuring polished antique furniture, while others have grand light fittings or contemporary, textured wallpaper, not to mention the big, incredibly comfortable beds.

If you’re here for a special occasion, we’d recommend opting for a Main House Superior 4 Poster for a four-poster bed and marble bathroom. If you’re travelling with a furry friend, there are a few dog-friendly rooms available at an extra charge (please notify the hotel ahead of arrival).
