Quiet, unspoilt and breathtakingly beautiful, the Sierra Nevada is an oft overlooked part of Spain, ditched in favour of Spain’s tourist-heavy stretches of coast. La Almunia del Valle is the perfect reason to try something a little different; located amidst lofty mountains and lush countryside, tranquility reigns here.
The 15-room hotel sits just outside the picturesque village of Monachil in the foothills of Sierra Nevada, around 15km from Granada. Make sure to bring your walking boots, with winding trails straight out of the hotel's back door.
It's worth noting that the hotel usually closes for much of December and January.
The hotel’s buffet breakfast provides excellent fuel for a day in the mountains, and is served out on the veranda in warm weather. Tuck into freshly baked pastries, hot dishes and homemade breakfast tapas among other specialities – all made using seasonal, fresh produce. Those with gluten or lactose intolerances can be catered for, but please notify the hotel before arrival.
Come dinner time, the restaurant serves up a set menu most evenings, where you can sample unpretentious home-cooked fare (please book in advance). Light lunches are also available throughout the summer.
Each of the 15 rooms have been stylishly done, with cool tones and much attention to detail. Most offer spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. Set across the original building and a nearby newer addition, there's no bad room here but most of the pricier options do come with a terrace and particularly lovely bathrooms.
In summer, lay amongst the olive and almond trees beside the pretty outdoor pool (open in summer months), while in winter you can cosy up around the fire – you could even go for a ski.
There are an abundance of walking trails to explore, or if you prefer, bicycles are available for hire and horse riding can be arranged through the hotel. After a long day, relax with a massages or treatment, which are available upon request.
