When it comes to Morocco, Fes can often lose out to beautiful Marrakech and charming little sister, Essaouira. Yet Fez, the country’s second-largest city, has so much to offer, including two medinas and the world’s largest car-free zone, that alters the feel and sound of the city dramatically. Come, see what Fez has to offer beyond the famous hat.
Shop until you drop in the markets, being careful to haggle and take a guide. In the center of the medina, visit the world’s oldest university at the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque. Explore the city’s famous tannery and perhaps pick up a bag or purse. Hunt for antique treasures in the Jewish Quarter, or make the hike to the Merenid tombs. Return to your Riad for an evening splash, before sitting on the roof with a cool drink.
Food & Drink
Those who travel to Morocco eat well - the things they can do with lamb, rice, and a tagine! Know that if you travel to Fez, you will encounter some exceptional dining. For an authentic taste of the country’s staples, visit Dar Roumana (30 Derb el Amer). Elsewhere, Cafe Clock (7 Derb El Magana) features one of the city’s weirdest and wonderful dishes, the camel burger!
Fez bustles with nightlife as it attracts more tourists. We recommend the stylish Riad Fez (
Where to stay
We’ve previously recommended Riad Fes as a great place for a drink, but it’s also a wonderful luxury hotel with pool, delightful restaurant and unbeatable location. Additionally, Riad Numero 9, tucked away in the labyrinth-like Medina is unbeatable for those who want to really immerse themselves in the culture and pace of life in Morocco.
How to get there
Ryanair flies to Fes from London daily.
