The magnificent Dar Liouba is a charming eight-room riad nestled in the heart of Essaouira’s old city. A former imam’s house, this building has been lovingly restored by a French designer with Russian origins. The riad's unique name - a combination of the Arabic word for house and the Russian for love - perfectly encapsulates the charming spirit and idiosyncratic character of this unique hideaway.
Dar Liouba is light, airy and fresh thanks to the three-storey high pergola that runs through the centre of the building, and the wondrous octagonal skylight it culminates in, making it the perfect retreat during sultry days. The inside garden provides a sanctuary from the bustle of Essaouira's old town, while the rooftop terrace gives knock-out sunset views over the city and the ocean.
The daily-changing breakfast is delightful. It's served on the incredible roof terrace, so you can enjoy stunning views of the surrounding area along with delicious fresh bread and homemade jams. Dar Liouba serves evening dinners on request; alternatively, owners Patricia and Jean-Jacques are happy to recommend their favourite authentic spots nearby.
Each of the eight rooms are light-filled, fresh, and decorated in its own unique colour theme. All are thoughtfully furnished and individually designed with Moroccan artefacts and crafts. Windows give great views over the surrounding medina, while many have a charming cedar-wood balcony overlooking the central courtyard, perfect for private relaxation.
For a lazy afternoon in, go up to the roof terrace, and read a book whilst sipping a cup of mint tea. If you feel like venturing out, the whole of Essaouira is on your doorstep. Explore the ramparts, shop in the souks, or walk along the stunning beaches. For something more active, the hotel can arrange for you to go dromedary riding, horse riding, or go on quad bike tours.
Golf lovers will be pleased to know that the Golf de Mogador, designed by legendary player Gary Price, is only a couple of kilometres away from the medina. This course, surrounded by sand dunes and forest, has some stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean, and is considered by some to be among the most beautiful in the world.
