a stylish and exclusive break in Essaouira(minimum stay 1 week)
Bottle of wine
At this boutique hotel/villa an organic modern living space has been moulded around ancient sandstone columns and thuya wood ceilings and then a mix of eclectic colorful lighting and furnishings has been added, mainly from the 1960's era. Dar Beida sleeps 8 and special attention has been made to make your stay as comfortable as possible. This Chic Retreat is built around a central courtyard and comprimises 4 storeys. On the ground level there is a library connecting to a chill out room with fire place. Out in the courtyard is a fountain and rest area with a blissfully comfortable hanging chair. Although Dar Beida is only rented as a whole guests can rent it for a minimum of three nights and it is ideal for friends or couples alike.
Each client at Dar Beida receives a pair of babouches [moroccan slippers] to wear in the house. Dar Beida is cleaned daily and traditional moroccan food can be cooked for you on request. There is a guardian who speaks fluent English and is happy to help out with any queries. Transfers to and from the airport to Dar Beida can also be arranged.
Dar Beida's kitchen has a concrete worktop with contemporary open shelving, displaying beautiful locally made dishware. A white archway leads into the dining room through which is the living room. This Chic Retreat is close to some good bakeries and fish and vegetable markets that are not too touristy. There is an excellent cook who, for approx £10 per person, will prepare a delicious meal in her home and bring it round whenever it suits you. When booking Dar Beida it is strongly recommended to request a meal to be prepared for your arrival. Tea, Coffee, Water and a Fruit Basket are provided on your arrival at Dar Beida.
By Bus from Marrakech There are regular buses as well as a constant stream of grand taxis ploughing the route between Marrakech and Essaouira. We'd advise taking the Supratours bus from outside the train station in Gueliz. These are fast (2.5-3 hrs) and air-conditioned, but less frequent (only 2/day, currently at 11am and 7pm).
If you're combining Essaouira with other parts of Morocco, it's easiest to fly into Marrakech or Agadir. Agadir is served principally by charters. Both Marrakech and Agadir are 2+ hours' drive (about 175km); you can either hire a car, book a taxi (from 600DH) or take a bus There are also some flights to Essaouira.
On the 1st floor of Dar Beida there is a huge open plan fully-equipped kitchen/diner at one end, a living space with stereo in the middle and a moulded bedroom and shower room towards the back. The 2nd floor has 2 double bedrooms with pod fireplaces in each which can be lit to create a cosy snug. In between the bedrooms is a curved bathroom with skylight. The upper rooms also have access to a terrace, complete with cactus and an awning made of bamboo sticks. The room at the very top of Dar Beida has sliding glass doors and its own private terrace with sink moulded into the wall.
