The medieval fortress of Antico Borgo di Tabiano has witnessed the clash of Emperors and Popes, played host to pilgrims treading the ancient road of the Via Francigena, and now offers luxurious hospitality to discerning travellers as a unique boutique hotel. The restored buildings of the medieval village and fortress include beautiful chapels, courtyards and terraces which are wonderfully evocative and create a rich historical atmosphere. Lovers of nature can lose themselves in the beautiful grounds surrounding the estate.

This hotel is a great destination for foodies, with two restaurants serving hearty regional specialties, while those looking to unwind can pamper themselves at the hotel’s extensive wellness facilities, or simply lounge beside the pool. Despite the historic exterior, Antico Borgo di Tabiano Castello is committed to an ecologically-sustainable future, and the hotel makes great use of solar panels and wood-burning stoves, using sustainably sourced firewood. This unique hideaway makes for an unforgettable retreat.

    Dining

A delicious buffet breakfast begins the day, where you’ll have a wide selection of local specialties and sweet treats to choose from. You have the choice of two restaurants within the village. The hotel’s restaurant Antintico Caseificio, is located in the old dairy factory, and serves delicious dishes prepared with produce from the property’s gardens, paired with regional wines. The independently managed Locanda del Colle offers some of the finest local produce, from delicious Parma hams to delectable Porcini mushrooms and truffles. Cheese lovers, rejoice: the Parmesan cheese here is absolutely divine, and not to be missed.

    Activities

In such a glorious setting, you might be forgiven for never leaving the hotel grounds. Uncover the fascinating secrets and hidden corners of the medieval village, or take a stroll through the simple country lanes in the ancient forests surrounding the castle. If you prefer to simply lie back and relax, the hotel has two pools, equipped with comfortable sun loungers.

Indulge yourself with a visit to one of the hotel’s two wellness areas: choose between the evocative settings of a natural cave, or the seclusion of a house nestled within a secret garden beneath the castle walls. Both are equipped with Turkish baths, Jacuzzis and saunas, and there are a range of treatments and massages available, including special sessions for couples, should you wish for a romantic treat.

Rather unsurprisingly, the hotel sits within an area that is rich in medieval history, and in the surrounding countryside you’ll find some of the oldest castles, churches, abbeys and walled towns in Italy. Foodies will enjoy visiting the local farms where Parma’s famous contributions to Italian cuisine are made. For those of a more active disposition, the estate is perfect for horse riding or mountain biking, while golfers can play on the nearby courses in Salsomaggiore, Castell’Arquato and Sala Baganza.
