Expect character and romance aplenty at this enchanting boutique lodge, from its sensational views to its extraordinary history. The award-winning hotel is perched on a hilltop in Meru National Park, enjoying breathtaking views out over the African plains - not to mention some otherworldly sunsets.
As for history, Elsa’s Kopje is nestled on the site where George Adamson set up his orphaned lion sanctuary (yes, really!), made famous in the biographical book and film ‘Born Free’. It’s from this remarkable story that the hotel takes its name, recalling one of the orphaned lionesses.
The romance doesn’t end there; step inside the lodge and you’ll be greeted with rustic chic décor, from the polished wooden floors dotted with Persian-style rugs, to the cosy domed wood ceilings.
With a range of Italian classics - the hotel has an outdoor pizza oven - and international dishes, there’s plenty to choose from come dinner time. Meals are served outdoors, so you can tuck into your dish at your own private table under the stars - romantic indeed.
Light lunches are also served and there is also a cooked-to-order breakfast which is included in most room rates (see rate detail below).
The ten cottages are carved into the hillside and have been rustically designed with wood furnishings and wooden ceilings. Most are open-fronted and feature their own private terrace, which looks out over the breathtaking Meru plains. Family options are available.
The diversity of wildlife at Meru National Park is unrivalled; its terrain varies from dense thickets and wooded grasslands through to craggy hills, rivers and open plains, and it is this variety that provides the home for Meru’s incredible wildlife.
While you can expect to see anything from elephants and giraffes, to lions and leopards, most notable of all is the incredible array of rhinos - Meru is a rhino sanctuary holding over 70 black and white beasts. All guides at Elsa’s Kopje are highly certified and well-versed in the area.
After a day’s wildlife-spotting, there is an outdoor pool to unwind in.
