Set in a converted windmill atop a hill on the tiny volcanic island of Kimolos, The Windmill is a lovely little boutique hotel. With just a handful of rooms, there’s a charmingly intimate feel to the place and, thanks to a recent renovation, it’s a rather stylish spot too.
It’s worth noting that the road up to the hotel is a steep one and, if you’re without car, not really viable for the less mobile. But with the altitude come the views and on clear nights the stars are amazing.
A great breakfast is included in most room rates (check detail below) and served till late – perfect for those holiday lie-ins – you just need to order what you’d like and at what time the day before. The Windmill also offers a cute little Café & Bar that serves a range of drinks and light snacks throughout the day.
The five rooms are each individually designed, embracing the architectural quirks of the historic building, and whilst some are a little cosy, all come with outdoor space and great views, either out over the sea or onto the pretty village below. Their décor is one of understated elegance – with whitewashed walls, quality linens and spotless, modern bathrooms boasting big, walk-in showers.
The beautiful Bonatsa beach is just nearby, with sunbeds and umbrellas reserved for hotel guests.
The island’s main (and only) village, Chorio, is a 10-minute walk away, and along with lots of little cafés, tavernas, restaurants and shops it has a post office, bank and pharmacy.
How to get there
Psathi, the island's only port, is 600m away from the hotel and can be reached by either foot or car.
It's worth noting that the road up to the windmill is a steep one.
Although there's no airport on Kimolos, you can fly to the nearby island of Milos which offers a domestic service to / from Athens a few times a week in the summer months. From here you can either catch the public ferry or the hotel can arrange for a taxi to meet you at the airport and take you to the ferry or speed-boat to bring you to Kimolos. Milos ferry terminal is a 15-minute drive from the airport (5km).
Santorini Airport and Athens Airport are the nearest international airports, with a ferry service from their ports to Kimolos.
