Housed within a striking Edwardian building adorned with female head keystones and a coppered cupola dome, One Aldwych is a refined boutique hotel just off the Strand, within walking distance of London’s theatres. The interiors, designed by Mary Fox Linton, are a delight for art-lovers thanks to the 400-plus pieces of contemporary pieces gracing the walls. Keep your eyes peeled for Justine Smith’s playful Beano the Dog sculpture standing guard in the reception.
The hotel’s Afternoon Tea, with enchanting sweet treats inspired by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, continues this playful theme – indulge in delectable bites such as chocolate egg filled with vanilla cheesecake and mango, or bubblegum panna cotta with meringue. And the Lobby Bar boasts an extravagant cocktail menu centering around London’s theatre scene. Serving vessels are as creative as the mixes they contain; try the Cesoir, a cocktail to share, served within an elegant silver and glass tapped goblet. Enjoy your tipple of choice to the sound of live piano music tinkling in the background. One Aldwych’s final secret is the impressive underground 18-metre swimming-pool, a real treat after a day spent exploring the city.
The hotel welcomes families, and has a number of facilities to make the stay as enjoyable as possible for your little ones.
Enjoy a casual dining experience at Indigo, where contemporary twists on British classics are served – the restaurant is perfect for pre- and post-theatre meals. For more formal occasions, book a table at Eneko Basque Kitchen & Bar, the London outpost of Michelin-starred Chef Eneko Atxa, whose delicate, creative take on Basque cuisine has won acclaim in his native Spain.
Rooms are comfortable, with pared-back design brightened by pieces of contemporary artwork and bold flower arrangements. Bathrooms feature bathtubs (some have a separate walk-in showers too), and a number of the pricier rooms have their own terraces with views over London. Some suites have interconnecting rooms that are suitable for families.
Unwind in the Health Club Spa, where you can treat yourself to a range of treatments. After a pampering session dive into the pool, which features underwater music and mood lighting for a truly special dip.
The helpful team at One Aldwych are always on hand to assist with booking theatre tickets. Or if you fancy soaking up a bit of culture, you’re well placed to explore some of the city’s finest galleries and museums. The British Museum and National Gallery are close, but for something a bit different try the Courtauld Gallery, home to an excellent collection of Impressionist art.
