Up in the mountain village of Bastelica, sits the charming 10-room boutique hotel, Artemisia. The long and winding drive it takes to get here will be amply rewarded: an overwhelming sense of calm and tranquility hangs about the place. Perhaps it’s the blooming gardens, or perhaps it’s the captivating mountain views – either way, this Chic Retreat makes a remarkably peaceful spot for a countryside getaway.
The hotel is housed in a purpose-built modern building, which plays host to quirky design features throughout. Downstairs is open plan, accommodating a sitting area and restaurant with large glass windows looking out over the garden and the valley beyond.
Run by the lovely owner, Christophe Gandon, you’ll never be short of a friendly face at Artemisia.
A scrumptious buffet breakfast is served out on the terrace or in the dining room, depending on the weather. Here you can fuel your day with home-baked cakes, local cheeses, cold meats and more.
Come dinner time, the restaurant awaits with an array of traditional Corsican dishes. Food is prepared using locally-sourced produce, so you can get a real flavour of Corsica. There is also a bar – perfect for an evening tipple.
The open plan design continues in the 10 bedrooms, with the bathrooms an integral part of the room – not to worry though, loos are separate. Bedrooms tend to be rather snug, with comfortable beds and, of course, magnificent views. It's worth noting that there is a 3-night minimum stay.
After a sun-drenched day outdoors, cool off in the irresistible plunge pool or snuggle up in the library with a holiday-read.
Whilst most people stick to the coastline during their visits, heading inland and up into the hills is a great way to see the real Corsica. The hotel is located in the charming village of Bastelica, which is well worth a poke around: walk amongst the sheep in the fields before seeking nourishment in one of the gourmet hole-in-the-walls and cafés.
It is worth noting that the hotel closes in November, but is open for the rest of the year.
