Rooms are decked out with cream fabrics, big beds and polished wooden furnishings. The modern bathrooms are crisp and spotless, coming with the added treat of luxe toiletries. Given the hotel’s extraordinary clifftop position, we’d recommend making the most of those bay views and opting for a sea view room. It’s also worth noting that some of the cheaper options come up a little on the small side, so we’d recommend upgrading if you like your space.
Housed in a rather grand looking country house, there’s rather more than meets the eye at Carlyon Bay Hotel. The seaside retreat was built in the early 20th-century, gaining a reputation for its glam and fashion as such guests as the Prince of Wales and Winston Churchill. Today it maintains that luxury feel, with ivory-hued furnishings, rich fabrics and a rather elegant entrance hall - not to mention jaw-dropping views over St Austell Bay.
It’s not just the hotel with a string of A Listers to boast of; the surroundings are regular haunts of filming crews (popular TV series, Poldark, was filmed along the coast) and the renowned Eden Project is just a short drive away.
This is a child-friendly hotel - great if you’re travelling with the family.
You won’t be short of activities here. Golfers can practice their swing on the 18-hole golf course - a championship offering no less - while those of us who prefer a racket in hand can head to the tennis courts for a game. There’s even a swimming pool to dip your toes into and plenty of great walking trails nearby.
All that exercise calls for a bit of TLC, and what better way to get it than at the hotel’s lavish spa. Enjoy an invigorating massage or beauty treatment, pop your head in the sauna or unwind in the hot tub.
Bringing the kids? There’s a supervised kids playroom during the school holidays, or head to the outdoor playground for some fun on the apparatus.
There is not one, but three excellent eateries to sample here at Carlyon, all serving delicious fare in an elegant setting. The fine dining Bay View Restaurant serves up some beautifully presented European fare, which can be enjoyed whilst soaking up those sweeping bay views. For something a little more relaxed, head to the Taste Brasserie for a Sunday Roast, or to the Club House for a light lunch.
