The municipality of Zagori in the rugged and mountainous north-western region of Epirus boasts breath-taking views and many a pretty stone village. Fitting right in, Kipi Suites is a cluster of restored and replicated mid-19th century village houses sitting atop the beautiful village of Kipi.
The hotel’s traditional exterior belies a refreshingly stylish and contemporary interior and the eight individually designed rooms offer a lovely blend of old and new.
But these houses – or suites, rather – wouldn’t be homes without the warm welcome and easy charm of owner Alexandros – his local knowledge is fantastic, so be sure to ask him for recommendations.
A great breakfast featuring plenty of fresh, local ingredients is served each day at the hotel's restaurant Kipi Bites. Lunch and dinner are also available on request and can be enjoyed out on the terrace in fair weather. Kipi Lounge offers a cosier spot for a drink with comfy armchairs and an open fire. If you don’t fancy eating at the hotel, why not try some of the village eateries – they're a short walk away along some pretty cobbled paths.
Named after the surrounding villages, the six suites are spacious and extremely comfortable, with big beds, cosy living areas and crisp, modern bathrooms. Each suite boasts its own entrance and stunning mountain views along with log fires – perfect if you’re here in cooler months.
Despite being better known for its islands, there’s a whole other side to Greece ripe for discovery that’s still relatively unchartered by the tourist masses and Zagori is just such a place. With quaint old villages, ancient ruins and the beautiful Vikos-Aoös National Park with its waterfalls and natural swimming pools – adventures abound. Or, if you fancy a break from all that nature and just feel like getting groovy, Ioannina and its vibrant nightlife is just 40km away.
