We love the remote, windswept islands off the coast of southern Brittany and with the gorgeous Hoëdic in its belt, it’s easy to see why. So the prospect of another reason to dote on them was, of course, met with open arms ‒ meet the beautiful Belle-Ile-en-Mer and its lovely Hotel La Désirade.
Located in the middle of the island, about 10-minutes' walk from the beach, the hotel comprises of just over 30 rooms. Each is set across six pink cottages which are dotted around a pool in large, landscaped gardens.
Given the hotel’s remote location, we recommend hiring a car for ease of getting here and around. It is also worth noting that the hotel is open from April to October.
A hearty breakfast is served each morning, consisting of home-baked pastries, breads and cakes, alongside local cheeses and home-made jams. La Désirade’s restaurant is also a must-visit, serving delicious seafood and lamb dishes.
Sprawled through six pink cottages, the 32 bedrooms are modern and comfy, with a decidedly beachy feel thanks to pine-clad walls and pale pastel furnishings.
Sunbathe by the lovely outdoor swimming pool, relax in the sauna and hot tub, or treat yourself to one of the massages and beauty treatments available in the spa. If you fancy something more active, there is also a small gym, and bicycles are available to hire from the hotel.
Service here is outstanding – the perfect combination of polite and attentive, and the owners take real pride in making sure their guests have an enjoyable stay. They’ll be happy to recommend their favourite spots, and with over 50 beaches to choose from, this does come in rather useful.
