  • Overview

Ever dreamed of getting away from it all, to a place far away? Wilderness Outpost at Bedwell River is the answer - remote, refined and remarkable. Twenty great white canvas deluxe guest and family tents, plus dining tents, spa tents, and lounge tents offer visitors a taste of how the fortunate spent their summers 'roughing it' some one hundred years ago. Inspired by the late 19th-century Great Camps the Wilderness Outpost at Bedwell River delivers indulgent luxury in remote and untamed wilderness. Children and grown-ups alike will relish this adventure and all the possibilities that come with it.

Whilst WIFI is available there is no in-room telephone or television (this would of course defeat the object of coming to such a breathtaking place), but mobile phone access is available in the cookhouse for those desperate to make contact with the outside world! The little shop stocks everything that you might need for your stay (or that you might have forgotten!) ie. Tooth brush, sunscreen, films etc.

The Outpost has 2 'lounge tents' - a games tent and a library tent. The former decorated with dark polished woods and burnished leather and the latter is actually an ultra modern, internet café providing WIFI from anywhere within 100' range. The Healing Grounds is an eco-safari style massage and treatment centre. There are 4 massage tents and 3 wood fired hot tubs, a cedar sauna, seawater baths as well as wrap-around sun decks. Holisitic therapies are on offer and nearby there is a small fitness area which sits alongside the yoga studio complete with underfloor heating.

Activities include: kayaking, canoeing, hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and guided activities (horseback riding, ocean and/or fresh water fishing as per package allowances noted below), whale and bear watching, Wild Side First Nations Interpretive Trail, Hot Springs Cove daytrek, skeet, fly tying clinics, kayaking and canoeing, and mountain bike riding.

Home is where the heart is and here the heart is the new ranch-style cookhouse with outdoor lounge and open kitchen. Timothy May is the critically acclaimed chef at the Outpost with each of his dishes starting with the same three ingredients; fresh, local and honest. His firm belief is letting ingredients speak for themselves. He serves an ever-changing menu or modern natural cuisine. Special diets are catered food, childrens menu provided and cooking classes are also on offer.

There is a great choice of accommodation here; Deluxe guest tents and family tents. The deluxe tents are roomy and built on raised wooden platforms connected by cedar boardwalks all along the water's edge. The 11 deluxe tents offer the choice of 1 queen or 2 single beds with luxurious down duvets. There are remote controlled wood stoves, antique dressers and china and a copious amount of candles to complete the magical atmosphere.

Electricity and water is supplied by off-site generators providing hot water to the private showers and basins, whilst also supplying power for air conditioning and WIFI. The modern composting loos are set in charming cedar outbuildings behind each tent. For those looking for a slightly roomier tent, there are 9 family tents which, along with the queen bed come with a convertible chesterfield (with luxury queen mattress) and a larger sitting area with a small games table. All the tents have everything you would expect from a small luxury hotel including hairdryers, air conditioning, books, postcards, slippers, insect repellant and body care products.
