Only when you book with Chic
If you’re looking for tranquility, a stunning setting and the warmest hospitality for your stay in the Basque region, then you’ve come to the right place. Housed in a beautifully converted 18th-century farmhouse, the Chic Retreat conceals an intriguing history; from its Civil War days as a refugee hideout, to its survival through the 19th-century War of Independence.
Renovated by the charming owner Alberto and his family, the style here is one of simple elegance, with the clean and contemporary design sitting neatly alongside the old stone walls and buffed up wooden floors of the original building. Beyond its walls, the sweeping fields and lush hills of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve are havens for a relaxing countryside break.
The Chic Retreat has an eco-friendly ethos, with fair trade food and a sustainable lifestyle. There is also disabled access across most of the hotel.
A buffet breakfast is served in the dining room or out on the terrace in fair weather.
All 12 rooms have comfortable beds and modern bathrooms. Opt for a Superior room if you’d like a bit more space or the Junior Suite, which comes with two extra single beds and is split-level – great if you’re travelling with kids.
Country views don’t come much better than this, so we’d recommend factoring a good chunk of time into your itinerary for just settling back on the terrace and taking it all in. The region also plays host to some great hikes that leave from the hotel, not to mention some lovely nearby mountain villages.
In this rural setting you will need a car to get around, with the historic town of Guernica just a 15-minute drive away, Bilbao 30 minutes and San Sebastián a little over an hour. The lovely staff can help organise all manner of activities, tours and transfers.
