Boutique hotels in Berkshire (4)

With its close proximity to London and lovely cities such as Windsor and Newbury under its wing, the sprawling county of Berkshire makes a perfect mid-week getaway or weekend escape. Push the boat out and book into Cliveden House Hotel, near Maidenhead, one of Chic Retreats luxury hotels in Berkshire. A grand stately home surrounded by 350 acres of Grade I listed formal gardens and parkland, it has 53 period rooms, a luxury spa and award-winning British restaurant.

For something more intimate and low-key, Miller of Mansfield is a 10 room boutique hotel in Berkshire with a restaurant and bar serving real local ales and British food (the bar is also open in the day for coffee and pastries). Another option is The Olde Bell in Hurley, a luxury Berkshire coaching inn with rooms by celebrated interior designer Ilse Crawford. Play tennis on a court in the walled garden, wander through the wild meadows and ask for a homemade picnic hamper from the kitchen to take down to the river for lunch. These are just a few of our favourite boutique hotels in Berkshire: to see more options suitable for all styles and budgets, check out the full collection.

What to do in and around Berkshire

First of all, there are several world-famous attractions to tick off your list. Windsor Castle, the Queen’s official home, is stunning and its state apartments and St George’s Chapel are open to the public. During the summer, the changing of the guard takes place daily at 11am (the rest of the year it happens on alternate days, but never on Sunday). You can see them marching up the high street but to witness the actual changing ceremony, you need to have paid to go into the castle. While you’re in Windsor, you can also take a tour of Eton College; visit The Savill Garden, an ornamental garden with 35 acres of streams, meadows and formal beds; and potter round the shops on the high street.

Berkshire has two famous racecourses to its name: Ascot and Newbury. Both have racing days all year round but if you’re visiting in June, it’s worth trying to book tickets to Royal Ascot, one of the biggest events in the racing calendar. You’ll also find plenty of small, picturesque towns, from Littlewick Green to Pangbourne, which is cited as a place that inspired author Kenneth Grahame. And if you like historical houses, do find time to visit Basildon Park in Reading, an 18th-century Palladian mansion, Highclere Castle (the film location for the television series Downtown Abbey) or the Tudor Shaw house.Children will jump at the chance to spend a day at Legoland Windsor.

Foodie adults should head to the nearby village of Bray, which boasts not one, but two, three-starred Michelin-starred restaurants: The Waterside Inn run by French chef Michel Roux and Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck. An alternative French fine dining option is L’Ortolan, just outside Reading, which also holds a Michelin star. More casual bites to eat can be found at The White Oak, a gastro pub in the village of Cookham (think pan fried hake, cauliflower macaroni cheese and roast leg of Cornish lamb) and its sister pub, The Greene Oak at Oakley Green.
