Castello di Ugento is Italy's newest castle hotel. This luxury hotel is a contemporary hideaway in Puglia where you're surrounded by history and magnificent ancient walls.

A luxury boutique hotel in its finest form (and so much more than a hotel), Castello di Ugento has just 9 beautifully designed rooms and suites which have been decorated with modern design pieces from Italian design houses Minotti, B&B Italia, Ceccotti and Cassina. Handmade Italian walnut armoires and antique pieces add a touch of vintage style and warmth and sit happily against the cool golden stone walls.

This extensive renovation project to restore the castle to its former glory began in 2013. Foundations of a Norman tower was unearthed, unseen for 900 years, along with Bronze Age archaeological finds and the circular tower dates back to the 13th-century. Not only was the castle itself restored but the stunning High Baroque frescoes from 1694, commissioned by Francesco and Nicola d'Amore, have been painstakingly brought back to life.

Located along the Ionian Coast, Ugento, in the province of Lecce, is a referred to as a 'città di arte' - city of art with its history reach back to the Massapic tribes. The small town has a historic centre decorated with palazzi and some of the best beaches in Puglia (Torre San Giovanni and Torre Mozza) are just a few miles away.

Castello di Ugento sits just 10 minutes from the beautiful white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters of the Ionian Sea, and 25 minutes from the tip of the heel of Leuca and the Adriatic sea with its grottos accessible by boat. The season for swimming is relatively long and starts from the end of April through to October.

There are plenty of authentic experiences to discover during your stay at Castello di Ugento and if you're looking to explore the local area then we recommend you spend some time with a local connoisseur, something the hotel can organise for you. This way you can discover the top cultural sites, artisan workshops and the best local cafés and food shops.

You'll find it hard to beat the world-class culinary school at Castello di Ugento. Whether you're a novice, professional chef or just love cooking there's a class for you. Individual classes, group classes or daily/weekly workshops can be organised throughout the year in the state-of-the-art kitchens. Trips to the local market and gathering herbs from the 18th-century kitchen garden while gleaning tips from the chefs are all part of the experience.

No stay in Puglia, let alone Italy, would be complete without visiting the local wineries or olive oil mills. The ones local to Castello di Ugento have been in the same families for generations and are at the heart of Puglia's traditions and culture. Meet the owners, visit their property and enjoy tasting their product whilst gaining a unique insight into Salento and its traditions.

Water babies will be in heaven here in Puglia with its crystal clear waters where the Adriatic Sea meets the lush Ionian Sea. Why not book a sailing cruise on a vintage boat or visit the many grottoes accessible only by water. Or if you simply want to top up your tan (don't forget your SPF!) then head to one of the many beautiful beaches along the Apulian coast. Sailing, kitesurfing, surfing and kayaking can all be arranged.

Spend a morning exploring the nature reserves, olive groves, dunes and the coast by bike, foot or horseback, it's a great way to get to know the area.

If you get restless just lying in the sun all day why not play a game of tennis, a round of golf or book in a private Pilates or yoga session.

Castello di Ugento's restaurant Il Tempo Nuovo is foodie heaven. Chef Tommaso Sanguedolce heads up a passionate team who celebrate seasonal products and local traditions. His focus is on flavour and creating masterpieces from the best and often the simplest ingredients from the local markets.

Pick a spot in the paved courtyard, ancient stables or La Torre Scoperta whose glass floor reveals a Norman Tower that was unearthed in 2015 during the renovation.

For a special occasion why not book the Chef's Table in the 17th-century bakery, now a state-of-the-art open kitchen where you'll see Chef Tommaso and his team hard at work preparing the Menu del Giorno.
