Design hotel Azor can be found on the island of São Miguel in the Azores archipelago of Portugal, and is ideally located in the charming capital and harbour town of Ponta Delgada. The stylish property features a spa, swimming pool, gym, casino, restaurant and rooftop whale watching bar, not to mention spectacular sea views.
Head to the bar on the 7th floor by the rooftop pool and sip on a cocktail while admiring the views and keeping an eye out for for whales in the ocean below. The head down to the Lobby Market where you'll find cheese, wine and Tapas, or for something a bit fancier make a booking at on-site À Terra restaurant where you can feast on regional delicacies such as fava bean soup with olives and chorizo market fish cooking on the Josper Grill and suckling pig with local pork pate and orange. Marina views make it an idyllic setting.
The 123 air-conditioned rooms at Azor Hotel all have port and sea views, balconies, and en-suite marble bathrooms with luxury bath products. Attention to detail is key, highlighted by the addition Expect clean lines, wooden floors, green hues, and the use of natural materials. Plus all the mod cons you'd expect from a design hotel including Smart TVs, bluetooth speakers and USB ports.
The Azores are surrounded by sea and nature: the islands' unique natural heritage includes volcanic caves, botanical gardens, flora and fauna and wonderful sea life. Together with the temperate climate, charming villages and traditional towns, it's an appealing destination, and the isle of São Miguel is an ideal base.
Both Batalha and Furnas golf courses are easily reachable from the hotel by car (the former is about 15 minutes away, the latter 35), as are volcanic lagoon Sete Cidades and crater lake Lagoa do Fogo. Other adventures on offer include canyoning, surfing and hiking (there are about 60 trails).
Animal lovers will be in the element: the islands are a top spot for whale and dolphin spotting; other creatures you may encounter are turtles and sharks. For those keen on fishing, go in search of blue marlin at Faial, Pico and São Jorge.
But if you want to just relax that's fine too: enjoy a treatment at the on-site eco spa, head up to the pool, or take a trip to the darks sands of Pópulo beach, just 4 kilometres eastwards.
